The univers includes industrial and commercial establishments with 250 or more employees, other leading European companies in terms of turnover with 150-249 employees, plus the head offices of banks and insurance companies.

Sampling Method
Sampling was undertaken in two stages. In the first stage, a representative sample of eligible establishments was drawn from the Duns Global Marketing Database or equivalent directory for each country. The second stage sample of individuals was obtained by telephoning each sampled establishment and obtaining the names of senior business executives with pre-selected responsibilities.

Timetable
Each executive selected was sent a questionnaire and covering letter in his/her own language. Questionnaires were dispatched between the 21st January and the 5th April 2002. A second questionnaire and letter were sent to non-respondents four to five weeks after the first mailout. Third waves were sent for some countries where necessary in April-June 2002. A fourth wave was sent for France in May 2002.
